Alastair Sawday Travel Guides give the Crown a major national accolade before our first birthday

24 Jun 2010

National Sawday’s Award for the Crown at Woodbridge, Suffolk

The Crown at Woodbridge named joint winner of the prestigious ‘Pub with Rooms’ award in Alastair Sawday’s Pubs and Inns of England & Wales 2010 guide.
Stephen David, Chef-Patron of this boutique townhouse inn at the heart of a charming riverside market town, was naturally thrilled about the Crown’s success:
“For dining pubs and inns like us, one of Alastair Sawday’s precious few national awards is a benchmark of success and we are completely shocked to have won - especially as it has only been ten months since we created the new Crown as the boutique townhouse inn it now is. As always it is a definite team effort, I want to thank the great enthusiastic staff we have and their hard work is well rewarded by this superb accolade.”
Recently visiting the Crown at Woodbridge to personally present this coveted award to Stephen, Alastair Sawday was delighted:
"An imaginative and impeccably attractive revival of a fine old pub, The Crown at Woodbridge has been created with panache and an obvious devotion to high quality. Unusually, this also comes with service as warm as it is professional. And the food was utterly faultless and delicious."
David Hancock, Editor of Alastair Sawday’s Pubs and Inns Guide (and also the first guest to stay in the Crown when it re-opened) commented: 'Returning a year on to The Crown, it's clear to see this smartly spruced-up townhouse inn shines like a beacon on the Suffolk coast for innovative food and boutique-style bedrooms'
What Sawday’s look for when choosing a ‘Pub with Rooms’ award winner:
With an increasing number of pubs wishing to promote their rooms above the bar – or in the converted barn, coach-house or stables across the way – our inspectors have visited more bedrooms than ever for this edition. Our eclectic bunch of inns-with-rooms get full-page entries and include bedrooms that range from swish suites with plasma TVs to simple but good rooms overlooking the sea. From those, our winners are good ‘all-rounders’ too, also serving excellent food, beers and wines.
Excerpts of Editor David Hancock's review in Alastair Sawday’s 2010 Pubs and Inns Guide:
"Everyone loves the new Crown, from its pastel façade to its cool laid-back interiors and humorous touches... beneath a glass roof a wooden skiff is suspended above a long granite-topped bar. In intimate dining rooms, chef-patron Stephen David’s menu trawls Europe for inspiration and draws on Suffolk’s natural larder. Look forward to hearty dishes full of flavour and some amazing taste combinations... or delve into the impressive list of wines. Cosseting bedrooms decorated in simple, Nantucket style and themed in white and grey are a further attraction. There are big beds, quirky touches and a host of extras... A chic Suffolk bolthole – unmissable!"
