The Crown proud to be named in The Independent newspaper's nationwide 50 Best Gastropubs list
The Crown at Woodbridge is the only Suffolk establishment recommended by The Independent
On Saturday 13 August edition in their nationwide benchmark list of the UK’s 50 Best Gastro Pubs, The Independent newspaper raised "a glass to the best places in Britain to wash down fine food with choice ales, scrumptious ciders and world-class wines”. The feature can be read here
Compiled with the help of an authoritative panel from The AA Pub Guide, CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale), Alastair Sawday’s Guide to Pubs and Inns and The Good Pub Guide, this chocolate box selection was selected from these experts' choices of the UK’s leading establishments.
Surprisingly considering the strength and appeal of Suffolk inns and pubs, The Independent’s list of the great and the good only featured one Suffolk establishment, The Crown at Woodbridge. In fact, across the whole of the East of England, there were only four gastro pubs highlighted.
The Independent describes The Crown At Woodbridge as “a classy inn with great food, urbane bedrooms and a cosmopolitan air’... Be wowed by its colourful pastel facade, cool, laidback interiors, the cosseting bedrooms, themed in white and grey, and the hearty dishes on the European-inspired menu that draws on Suffolk's natural larder. A chic East Anglian bolthole - unmissable.”
Stephen David, Chef – Patron of The Crown At Woodbridge was thrilled:
“We are, of course, delighted to have our efforts recognised on the national stage - it is testament to the hard work and effort of our enthusiastic team who have helped make The Crown At Woodbridge stand out as somewhere a little different and special. And to be the only gastro pub listed in Suffolk is even more flattering but perhaps undeserved – it surprises me that more locally were not listed, we after all just one of a handful of very good places in our wonderful county, who equally deserve recognition. Suffolk has it all, great ingredients, delicious beers and cyder, beautiful scenery, enthusiastic landlords, and as we know, the best pubs and inns!”
