In 1840 Anna Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford started to dine on bread, butter and tea in the afternoon, as a bridge between breakfast and supper. The Duchess began to invite her friends to join her, and before long afternoon tea was established as a private social function.
In recent years, this British culinary tradition has been given a whole new lease of life thanks to TV shows such as The Great British Bake Off and national events including the Queen's Diamond Jubliee and the Olympics.
Today, afternoon tea is enjoyed throughout the world. From traditional, cream tea to champagne afternoon tea, all options provide the perfect social event for all occasions.

The Royal Wedding Afternoon Tea will be served between 12noon and 5pm on 19th May; traditional afternoon tea is also available at The Crown every day from 3pm until 5pm. Tables must be reserved at least two days in advance, to book call 01394 384242.
